Below are some NAMES that clever participants in previous experiments have MADE UP that seem RELEVANT to the particular stimuli to which they are applied.
Previous work has indicated that the following RELVANT NAMES affect perception of the shapes in ways that Irrelevant Names do not. We are not replicating the procedures of previous research here; rather we are letting you design your own approach to the phenomenon in general.
Shape Number |
Relevant Name (word or phrase) |
1 |
Knight [Helmut and Lance] |
3 |
Swan |
5 |
Rabbit |
Comparison Shape Numbers: 2, 7, 10.
Check your own experience. The simplest way to check your experience is to look at a shape after you have categorized it with a Relevant Name and notice how it in some way comes to "look like what that name refers to." More formally you might wait a day or so and redraw a couple of shapes to which you've applied relevant names. Compare the your process in drawing those with your process redrawing a couple other ones to which you did NOT apply relevant names.

Two aid with making up experiments for yourself we will provide you a second list of relevant names (for the comparison set of shapes--numbers 2, 7, 10). You can do what you want with them. Our intention is that you can if you want, your can examine applying the first list of relevant names to some stimuli to experience whatever it is you experience for the process you set up. You might want to compare your experience with shapes 1, 3, 5 (noting the affects of Relevant Names) with your experience with shapes 2, 7, 10 to which you have not (yet) applied relevant names.
Below (scroll down) you will find a table with relevant names for the comparison set of shapes.
[The the power of linguistic naming on FA is often strong enough that we judge it best to make sure you see the relevant names before you want to; thus the empty space below.]
Shape Number |

2 |
Bear |
7 |
Duck |

Here are some other sets of shapes with their relevant names for you to play with.

Relevant Name (word or phrase) |
13 |
Nun (with Candlestick) |
12 |
Pegasus |
26 |
Woman (with Book) |
NOTE: All 30 shapes have relevant names. Some are more of a stretch than others. Some just require a bit of clever framing.
