Representing Dynamics with
Nodes and with Sound

Instructions

Nodes. You can activate the Nodes simply by pressing PLAY (though the pattern you see will not be accurate unless you slow down the representation to below 66 frames per second (fps or ips) using the DELAY controls).

How we represent the dynamics of a system is crucial in determing what sort of patterns we are able to extract from that system. What happens in the process of knowing is tightly tied to the process of represenation.

A Dynamic System. In the image the array is 10 nodes by 10 nodes = 100 nodes. We will assume that the 100 nodes in the 10x10 array is the dynamic system whose patterns we want to discover. Does it have basins? What are the qualities of the basins it might have?

Press Perturb. Does the system change basins? How do you know?

While the Node Frame expresses the flow of dynamics visually in a form that is very close to how the model was conceptualized, staring at a bunch of blinking lights is not always epistemologically the most useful way of discovering pattern in a complex and dynamic context.

Use Delay. Adjust the delay between iterations until you are running below 66 iterations per second (ips). Choose a speed that is perceptually useful to you.
