Every summer, SROP-Psychology accepts both undergraduate and pre-masters level graduate students into an 8 to 10-week internship that provides valuable research and professional development experience under the guidance of faculty in the Department of Psychology. The program is designed is to strengthen the skills needed get into and successfully complete a doctorate program in psychology or related fields. In addition to receiving excellent research training and graduate school preparation/support, students have opportunities to participate in social activities with other interns, faculty & graduate students, to take advantage of Salt Lake City’s cultural activities (music, festivals, theatre), and to explore the surrounding mountains, deserts, and world famous National Parks.

The SROP-Psychology program is supported by a training grant from the National Institute of Mental Health.

SROP includes the follwoing components:

Research Training: Students work as an intern on a research project with a faculty mentor. Work may include conducting experimental sessions, reading background literature, participating in weekly research meetings, collecting, coding, and analyzing data. Faculty mentors are chosen to match each student’s research interest.

Professional Development Support: Students participate in a professional issues seminar, which covers topics such as preparation for Ph.D. level graduate programs, presentation of research papers, and career planning. Students interact with outstanding researchers from several specialty areas, such as clinical, cognitive, developmental, health, physiological, and social psychology and related program of study, such as counseling and educational psychology and neuroscience.

GRE Preparation: Students participate in a GRE seminar based on a professional system of instruction (e.g., Kaplan with Higher Score Guarantee). Students attend intensive sessions in a small group format during the early part of the summer program and attend practice sessions to work on particular skills during the remaining weeks. Students take practice GRE tests (pre-post seminar). In addition, students have the opportunity to continue their GRE preparation after the summer via online training sessions. GRE instruction during and after the program is paid for by SROP

Presentations & Travel Awards: students present their research project in manuscript, oral, & poster formats at the end of the program. Students interested in presenting their projects at regional or national conferences are eligible for SROP travel awards to cover travel, conference fees, and other expenses.

Benefits: Students receive room & board on campus, along with a summer stipend (approximately $3,000 for undergraduate & approximately $4,000 for graduate students). Students are eligible to receive up to six hours of academic credit from the University of Utah. Travel expenses to and from Utah are paid for by the program

Coordination with campus-wide SROP
Students in SROP-Psychology participate in the larger University of Utah SROP which provides trainings to students from a variety of disciplines. The Graduate School at the University of Utah runs this cross-disciplinary program, providing students with the opportunity to interact with other outstanding underrepresented students interested in graduate study. These opportunities occur through seminars, field trips, and social activities.
