Every summer,
SROP-Psychology accepts both undergraduate and pre-masters level
graduate students into an 8 to 10-week internship that provides
valuable research and professional development experience under
the guidance of faculty in the Department of Psychology. The
program is designed is to strengthen the skills needed get into
and successfully complete a doctorate program in psychology
or related fields. In addition to receiving excellent research
training and graduate school preparation/support, students have
opportunities to participate in social activities with other
interns, faculty & graduate students, to take advantage
of Salt Lake City’s cultural activities (music, festivals,
theatre), and to explore the surrounding mountains, deserts,
and world famous National Parks.
The SROP-Psychology program is supported by a training grant
from the National Institute of Mental Health.
SROP includes the follwoing components:
Research Training: Students work as an intern
on a research project with a faculty mentor. Work may include
conducting experimental sessions, reading background literature,
participating in weekly research meetings, collecting, coding,
and analyzing data. Faculty mentors are chosen to match each
student’s research interest.
Professional Development Support: Students
participate in a professional issues seminar, which covers topics
such as preparation for Ph.D. level graduate programs, presentation
of research papers, and career planning. Students interact with
outstanding researchers from several specialty areas, such as
clinical, cognitive, developmental, health, physiological, and
social psychology and related program of study, such as counseling
and educational psychology and neuroscience.
GRE Preparation: Students participate in a
GRE seminar based on a professional system of instruction (e.g.,
Kaplan with Higher Score Guarantee). Students attend intensive
sessions in a small group format during the early part of the
summer program and attend practice sessions to work on particular
skills during the remaining weeks. Students take practice GRE
tests (pre-post seminar). In addition, students have the opportunity
to continue their GRE preparation after the summer via online
training sessions. GRE instruction during and after the program
is paid for by SROP
Presentations & Travel Awards: students
present their research project in manuscript, oral, & poster
formats at the end of the program. Students interested in presenting
their projects at regional or national conferences are eligible
for SROP travel awards to cover travel, conference fees, and
other expenses.
Benefits: Students receive room & board
on campus, along with a summer stipend (approximately $3,000
for undergraduate & approximately $4,000 for graduate students).
Students are eligible to receive up to six hours of academic
credit from the University of Utah. Travel expenses to and from
Utah are paid for by the program
Coordination with campus-wide SROP
Students in SROP-Psychology participate in the larger University
of Utah SROP which provides trainings to students from a
variety of disciplines. The Graduate School
at the University of Utah runs this cross-disciplinary program,
providing students with the opportunity to interact with other
outstanding underrepresented students interested in graduate
study. These opportunities occur through seminars, field trips,
and social activities. |
