Although a Bachelors degree in psychology is not required, applicants
are expected to have successfully completed the basic courses
required for a degree in psychology (including statistics and
research methods). Although exceptions are made, a GPA of 3.4
is recommended. If you have a degree in a field other than Psychology,
you may still qualify, although some additional preparation
may be necessary.
see: FAQ #10
The Graduate Record Examination is required for all admission
to all areas. If you are applying to the Clinical Area, you
must also complete the Psychology Advanced Subject Test. Arrangements
for taking these examinations can usually be made through your
college or university. They should be taken early enough so
that the scores will be received in our office by the application
deadline. Although exceptions are made, a minimum of 600 each
on the verbal and quantitative components of the GRE is recommended.
For a statement of the department policy on the new GRE analytic
writing test.
see: FAQ #16.
This statement should provide a concise, well-written summary
of your specific research and career goals, the reasons for
your interest in our program (including discussion of faculty
members with whom you hope to work and the fit between their
research interests and your own), your prior educational and
work experience, and any other appropriate information. This
letter is your chance to demonstrate that (1) you have the prior
experience necessary to begin graduate training in Psychology;
(2) you have well-defined research interests and know how to
communicate them clearly; and (3) there is an excellent fit
between your specific goals and interests and those of Utah's
program and faculty.
If you are applying to the Clinical Area, please download Supplemental
Clinical Instructions.
Although previous research experience is not required, it is
a good indicator of future success in all areas of our program,
and we therefore weigh such experience heavily in evaluating
applications. Even if your research experience is not directly
tied to your current research interests, please describe it
in your personal statement.
If you are selected for a personal interview, you will be notified
in late winter or early spring.
All applicants must submit two different sets of forms: one
to the University of Utah Graduate Admissions Office and one
to the Psychology Department (both due by December 15). Application
forms may be downloaded at Application
Materials and Instructions. |
