Environment & Behavior
  • Do you care about your neighborhood?
  • What about natural areas in your backyard and local parks?
  • What have you done to harm or protect native wildlife in your backyard?
Environmental psychologists study how people relate to and use the environment. We at Utah are interested in both the natural and built environments. How can we create safe, attractive, user-friendly and sustainable communities? How does the design of the environment contribute to quality of life?

Brown and Werner conduct research on a variety of aspects of people-place relationships. Brown has long-standing interests in territoriality and place attachment, especially how those relate to community relationships and neighborhood viability. Some of her current research evaluates place attachment as it relates to "new urbanism", or designers' and planners' visions of liveable communities. Werner is interested in behavior change, and how new urban designs facilitate environmental behaviors such as low water use and transit use. For other information about Werner's research on environmental activism ("green psychology") see the "Persuasion and Behavior Change" interest group.
