Lesson #13, Chapter 11: The third year of life.
Study Question #11.
Experiential Lesson # 11: Relax, Remember...
Infants from 34 - 36 months (Chapter 11)
1. What is the categorical self? What distinguishes 2-3 year-olds who are more advanced in their gender labeling?
2. What underlying abilities at this age account for the emergence of pretend play, private speech, and theory of mind?
3. What are some factors that account for between family differences in sibling conflict? Does sibling conflict necessarily have a negative impact on development? What should parents do about it?
Lesson #14, Chapter 12: The effects of Infancy
In this short but important chapter, the author reviews and summarizes the main themes that he has emphasized throughout the book. I highly recommend that you read and re-read the chapter, making sure that you comprehend the ideas and can explain them in your own words (a hint for the exam). The study questions for this week should help you to do that.
Study Question #12 and #13: You will be writing TWO papers this lesson and getting TWO grades.
Experiential Lesson # 12: Futures Past
1. This chapter describes research on continuity in development in a number of different areas. Choose one of these areas and show how the research illustrates the two main developmental principles: (1) development is a complex process involving many factors; and (2) no two individuals respond in the same way to the same situation.
2. What is the author's point of view about the conflict between the two developmental principles above and the requirements for measurement in quantitative research? Explain how your own experiences doing the experiential lessons this semester either support or do not support the author's view (You don't have to agree with the author. Your response, as always, will be judged on the basis of how you cite evidence and articulate your ideas).
Lesson #15: Final Exam and Extra-Credit Lessons
Schedule Final Exam.
This exam covers material from the entire class. As in the midterm, I am looking for your integration and application of the ideas from the course materials and study questions.
Extra-credit experiential lessons: 1) More Breathing 2) Crawling #2
