Ways to Reduce Dissonance

As we learned in class, cognitive dissonance is psychologically uncomfortable, and we are motivated to reduce it. To reduce dissonance, we can recruit additional cognitions that support our behavior, or we can change some of our attitudes to match our new situation. So, now that we think of it, there are many advantages to living in Salt Lake City and, in fact, some drawbacks to living in Hawaii.

Advantages To Living In Salt Lake City

1. Amazing national parks --
    Zion, Bryce, Arches, and more.
2. More than 10 skiing and boarding
     resorts within a 30-min drive
3. Sundance Film Festival
4. Great professional basketball
5. Great college basketball, go Utes!

6. On the days we have inversions,
you have the opportunity to stay
in and catch up on your reading.

Rationalization Award

7. You can sail the Great Salt Lake and
go downhill skiing, all in the same day
8. Where else can you say, If I lived
15,000 years ago, I would be
     submerged under the water of
     Lake Bonneville?

9. Hiking and fishing at Lake Powell
10. A toy rush hour (compared to
      other cities, even Honolulu)
11. The Winter Olympics is unlikely to
      come to Hawaii anytime soon.

      Disadvantages to Living in Hawaii

1. Things are expensive.
A box of cereal can be $6.
Don't even ask about the milk.
2. You are on an earlier time
     zone than most people in
     North America. They forget this,
and phone you at 4 a.m.
3. It's hard to keep sand out of your car.
4. If you live in paradise, you might     habituate to it, and no longer enjoy it.     (Right.)
